Description:

Abstract:

This dataset contains Recreation Sites identified by a point location. Recreation Sites that are mapped here include: Developed Recreation Sites, Dispersed Recreation Sites, Designated Recreation Sites, and other points of recreational interest. Where locations could be represented by an area polygon a centralized point was digitized to represent a general recreation site location.

Purpose:

Mapping at large scales using markers to show locations of campgrounds or other recreational sites.

This coverage was created using point data gathered by various sources and various means, these include but are not limited to: Emergency Plan data from GPS and digitizing, Travel Plan data from GPS and digitizing, Digitizing centeralized points using GPS road data as a guide, digitizing using DOQs as a guide. The points within this coverage are not meant to describe a precise location on the ground, rather a general area within a larger recreational site polygon. GPS data may have been altered to acheived this effect. The points are linked to the INFRAstructure database where there is a record in the database, currently this is only for the sites that have been determined to be "Developed Rec Sites" by national and regional protocol. The designated and dispersed recreational points representing a lesser development are in the process of being captured in the database (2004).

All developed, designated and dispersed recreation sites were removed from the AllPoints feature class and added to this one. These include but are not limited to campgrounds, picnic areas, boat launch sites, campsites, recreation special uses, etc. The AllPoints dataset stores actual building or feature locations that may be associated with the recreation sites.
